The Swedish Method: three things to look for in any passage
SOAPaDay is a free, ad-free discipleship program from Faith Software, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that builds technology to help people draw closer to God.
The Swedish Method is one of four study methods you can choose each time you journal.
What the method is
A simple way to read the Bible alone or with others. Pray, read a short passage of about 10 to 15 verses, and then look for three things. It encourages careful reading and lets everyone take part, which makes it a natural fit for small groups.
With a group, everyone reads the same passage, then each person shares one light bulb, one question, and one arrow. SOAPaDay itself is a personal journal.
The steps
Step 1 · Light bulb
Something that shines
Mark a truth, phrase, or insight that stood out or spoke to you personally.
In SOAPaDay you'll see: "Something that shines out — a truth, phrase, or insight that stood out to you."
Step 2 · Question mark
Something unclear
Note anything confusing or that raises a question. Try to answer it from the passage or from earlier in the book, and look into it further.
In SOAPaDay you'll see: "Something unclear or puzzling in this passage that you would like to understand better."
Step 3 · Arrow
Something to apply
Choose something that applies to your own life, a way you'll respond or act this week. Finish by praying.
In SOAPaDay you'll see: "Something that applies to your own life — what will you do in response?"
