The COMA method: understand the passage, then respond
SOAPaDay is a free, ad-free discipleship program from Faith Software, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that builds technology to help people draw closer to God.
COMA is one of four study methods you can choose each time you journal.
What the method is
COMA guides your time in the Word with questions about the text, about God, and about yourself. Not every question fits every passage, and answering even one or two is a good day in the Word.
The steps
Step 1 · C — Context
Understand the setting
Who wrote this, to whom, when, and why? What kind of writing is it: history, poetry, letter, or law? What comes just before and after?
In SOAPaDay you'll see: "Who wrote this, to whom, and why? What kind of writing is it (history, poetry, letter, law)? What comes before and after?"
Step 2 · O — Observation
Notice what the text says
Look for repeated words and ideas, images, key terms, and tone. Who are the people, and what do they say or do? What surprises you?
In SOAPaDay you'll see: "What words, phrases, or images repeat? What is the tone? What stands out or surprises you?"
Step 3 · M — Meaning
Discover what it means
What does this teach about God, His people, and His world? How does it point to Jesus? Try to sum up the main point in one sentence.
In SOAPaDay you'll see: "What does this teach about God, his people, and his world? How does it point to Jesus? Sum up the main point in one sentence."
Step 4 · A — Application
Respond to God
How does this challenge or confirm what you believe? Is there an attitude to change, a promise to trust, or a new way to live?
In SOAPaDay you'll see: "How does this challenge or confirm your understanding? What attitude, promise, or way of living is it calling you to?"
